The other day, when I took the Keishin Line to take a ride on the Lake Biwa Sosui sightseeing boat, I learned for the first time that there was such an amazing train, so I went to ride it again. I rode the train three times from the morning (between Biwako Hamaotsu Station and Uzumata Tenjingawa) for a whole day. Not only did I enjoy riding the streetcars, but I also enjoyed just watching the streetcars coming and going at the intersection in front of Hamaotsu Station. It’s a sight you can’t see anywhere else. I also took the front view. The latter half of the video between Uzumasa Tenjingawa and Biwako Hamaotsu is very high quality and beautifully shot, and is the quintessential SONY A7S3 video. I highly recommend you watch it!
The Keihan Electric Railway Keotsu Line is the only line in Japan where the same carriage can play three roles: subway, mountain railway, and streetcar. It’s like an amusement park attraction! It is said that the price of a high-tech carriage that can perform these three roles is more than the price of a bullet train per meter. The 800 series cars on the Keishin Line are 16.5 meters long and consist of four cars, each of which is 66 meters long. The length of streetcars in Japan is limited to 30m or less by law, but the 66m length of the Keishin Line was approved as a special exception to accommodate the transportation capacity of the Keishin Line. The Keishin Line and Enoden are the only two lines in Japan where ordinary trains run on the road together with automobiles. Also, the slope between Kamisakaecho and Otani is one of the highest in Japan, with a large 61‰ (permil), the third highest in Japan after the 90‰ of the Igawa Line of the Oigawa Railway and the 80‰ of the Hakone Tozan Railway. Otani Station, at 159 meters above sea level, is the highest of all Keihan Electric Railway stations and the steepest incline of any regular railroad or track in Japan. The Keishin Line runs between Biwako Hamaotsu and Misasagi, and the Kyoto City Subway Tozai Line runs between there and Uzumata Tenjingawa (the last stop).
